When people around here talk about 'apple-picking', it's really a code word for 'cider donuts'. Sure it's fun to pick apples, and to roam about an orchard even on a cold autumn day. But what's more fun is to get inside the farm house where there is a real fire burning in the fireplace, mulled cider boiling, apples being pressed the old-fashioned way, and most importantly, cider donuts hot off the oil!
Our kids have been hearing about cider donuts months before we moved back to New England. We thought maybe it would give them something to look forward to even though they had not a clue of what it meant. Today at Russell's Orchard in Ipswich, Mass, they got their first taste of this very uniquely New England pastry. I don't think they were disappointed. Jim and I, at least, appreciated this side of New England today!
With full tummies, and our trunk full of apples, we drove just a little bit further to Crane Beach. In Santa Cruz, we were spoiled with countless beaches to choose from. Crane beach is probably the closest 'real' beach to us here. It was clear that the kids had been missing their beach time.
Shoes came flying off both of them despite the frigid temperature of the day. They set off to search for treasures without asking for help. It was fun to watch two little bodies (all bundled up) running back and forth, not caring about anything else in the world, but their shells, or feathers, or occasional seaweed that they came across.
They were as happy as they could have been as though they were on some tropical beach on a hot summer day.
